Three Simple Principles for Becoming a Better Leader

Thursday, May 27, 2010 I’ve been lucky in my life to have been
surrounded by great leaders and people who have reached their full
potential. Through my association with them, I have been lifted up
and encouraged to be a better person. When I look closely at what
they have done to live successful lives, I can recognize a few basic
characteristics that they all have in common. I’d like to share with
you now these three simple principles and I hope you can use them as
you become a better person and leader. #1 Know where you want to go
When Alice was lost in the wonderland of Lewis Carroll’s classic
novel, she asked the Cheshire cat for directions. After Alice
explained to the cat that she didn’t know exactly where she wanted
to go, the cat replied, “Then it doesn’t much matter which way you
go.” Similarly, if you don’t know what you want out of life, you
will have a difficult time getting there. It is critical to have
your dream life in mind so that you’re constantly adjusting and
designing your business in such a way to accomplish it. You could
very easily be highly successful and not accomplish the lifestyle
you really want and have dreamed about. #2 Surround yourself with
good examples After determining who you want to be, I think you have
to look around for role models and figure out who seems to be living
the life you want to live. Once you do that, start acting like those
people in every way that you can. Over time you will become that
person you wanted to be. If you don’t think you have that kind of
potential, then you’ve been hanging out with the wrong group of
people. Do everything you can to get in a room full of people who
have a positive outlook on life and start cultivating that within
yourself. #3 Help others along the way In the conventional corporate
world, people get ahead by helping their boss improve his life. They
are employees who work at helping their boss be more successful, and
then their boss brings them along. In our business, it’s really the
opposite. People have their most success by helping people under
them to improve their lives and to have their own success. Our
people are not getting pulled up by someone but rather they are
helping pull or lift someone else up. So, our program is really
built around a giving perspective. The more people you help, the
more successful you become. Again, helping others is what we are all
about – being a force for good. It is that spirit that keeps me
here. It’s the thing that makes it fun and satisfying. It’s the
thing that I want to project to my children. I want them to have a
spirit of giving of self and time, talents, energy, and money to
help other people – and even better if they can do that to create
their own livelihood. Following these three simple rules will give
you the tools you need to achieve the success you are meant for.
Know where you want to go. Surround yourself with good examples and
help others along the way. It works for me!
